Although it has been said that the South Shore Line spent its first 70 years trying to go out of business, it is now operated by a government agency, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and plans are afoot for an even greater expansion. Some of the trials and tribulations, including accidents, are covered as well as the valiant efforts to keep the only rail commuter service in Northern Indiana operating. That includes runbys by the early alternating current interurban cars, the famous orange direct current cars and the current, state of the art silver sided cars.
